Celebrate Media Literacy Week with Cyber Civics

Media Literacy Owl

Join us on October 21-25 when will be celebrating Media Literacy Week. We want to help you celebrate too, with some easy-to-show resources below, but first...

What is Media Literacy?

Media Literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, create, and act using all forms of communication.

U.S. Media Literacy Week is hosted annually by the National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE). Their mission is to highlight the power of media literacy education and its essential role in education across the country. You can learn more about it and all the events and activities happening here.

We invite you to celebrate this important week with us by sharing a lesson a day with your students! If you like what you see, book a demo and we will gladly show you the entire curriculum.

Enjoy and Happy Media Literacy Week.

Day 1: Who's Behind the Information?

At Cyber Civics we take media literacy seriously, with media literacy lessons offered throughout our comprehensive curriculum for grades 4-8, plus a full level (for 8th graders) devoted to the topic.

This video is the first of three about “Analyzing Online Information.” These lessons are based on research conducted by the Stanford History Education Group (SHEG) who discovered that many young people “lack the skills to judge the reliability of information online.” We need to fix this!

Day 2: You Can't Believe Everything You See

Even young students need help understanding misinformation! “You Can’t Believe Everything You See” is from our Digital On-Ramps curriculum for grades 4-5. It introduces young students to the importance of thinking twice about what they find online. If you want to see any of the lesson plans that accompany these videos, just schedule a demo and we'll share them with you!

Day 3: Respect the Personal Information of Others

“Understanding Perspective” is the follow-up lesson to “You Can’t Believe Everything You See” from our Digital On-Ramps series of lessons for late elementary school. This lesson helps young students understand that they will encounter a lot of different viewpoints online!

Day 4: Don't Let That Photo Fool You!

“Visual literacy” is an important component of media literacy, especially since so much of the media young people consume is visual. In our “Don’t Let That Photo Fool You” lesson, students learn how to be discerning users of visual media.

Day 5: What is a Deepfake?

With AI upon us, it is important for a media literacy curriculum to include lessons about the impact of images and videos that have been altered or completed generated by artificial intelligence. This lesson, “What is a Deepfake?,” explores the difference between a video or photo being altered for fun, or altered to spread misinformation or even disinformation.

We hope these videos will inspire important conversations in your homes and in your schools about media literacy. Enjoy your week!!
